We can screen the overall skeletal phenotype using different approaches. For a standard analysis, the skeletal morphology is screened using complete specimens that are cleared and stained. This allows the identification of regions and skeletal components that show indications of abnormal development. Here, distinction can be made between cartilaginous and bony elements.
For more detailed analyses of both the external ánd internal analysis of bone development, specimens can be subjected to micro-CT scanning and 3D reconstructing. This can give µm level information on bone formation. This can be combined with contrast staining protocols which allows the visualisation of both mineralised and soft tissue (internal organs) using micro-CT scanning.
