Wim Vyverman

Prof. Dr. Wim Vyverman is head of the research group Protistology and Aquatic Ecology (PAE). He is also director of the BCCM/DCG culture collection. Prof. Dr. Vyverman established the PAE lab in 1996 and has more than 25 years of experience in aquatic ecology, microbial biodiversity & evolution and algal biotechnology.

Recent research focuses on:

  • Evolution, speciation and adaptation in microalgae;
  • The development of non-model diatoms for biotechnological innovation;
  • Novel strain improvement techniques;
  • The application of metabarcoding and metagenomics for biodiversity study.

Prof. Dr. Vyverman is particularly interested in integrating ecological and evolutionary concepts into applied research, e.g. in aquaculture, aquatic waste stream valorization, and the sustainable production of microalgae and their metabolites.
