Research Unit of Exercise Physiology and Sports Training

The Research Unit of Exercise Physiology and Sports Training is part of the Department of Movement and Sports Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Ghent University. It performs research towards acute and chronic adaptations of the human body to exercise and sports. The available expertise spans the range between fundamental and applied exercise physiology, including studies on sedentary and patient populations as well as on recreational and elite athletes.

The research group is internationally well recognized for its expertise on:

  • Exercise physiology: oxygen uptake kinetics and oxygenation responses at the brain, the locomotor and respiratory muscles;
  • Sports physiology: aquatic (e.g. sailing, kitesurfing, rowing) -, team (soccer, basketball) – and individual (e.g. cycling, gymnastics) sports;
  • Clinical exercise physiology: mitochondrial myopathies, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome;
  • Environmental exercise physiology: Blue Life Sciences (e.g. apnea, diving response, lifeguarding), Blue Gym, heat stress, sleep.
