Colin Janssen

Prof. Dr. Colin Janssen is full professor of Ecotoxicology and Marine Ecology at Ghent University’s GhEnToxLab. He teaches courses in aquatic ecology, environmental health & toxicology and risk assessment to graduate and undergraduate students. Prof. Dr. Colin Janssen currently co-supervises a research team of approximately 15 collaborators and (on average) around 5 to 10 M.Sc. students per year, which are actively studying the ecological risks of chemicals and other stressors in freshwater and marine systems, stress and evolutionary ecology, and ecological risk assessment modelling / procedures for chemicals and environmental stressors such as global change.

In addition to his academic career in the field of environmental health, Prof. Dr. Colin Janssen has provided independent scientific services to numerous organizations, such as the Belgian Health Council and to various national environmental agencies and international organizations such as OECD, EU and WHO. He is currently chair of the scientific committee of the Flanders Marine Institute, and is acting vice-chair of the Board of Directors. Prof. Dr. Colin Janssen has provided independent scientific advice to both national and international policy / regulatory institutions and to international industry organizations on fundamental science and regulatory issues concerning environmental quality criteria setting, risk assessments of new and existing substances and other issues related to environmental health.
