Maritime Institute

Ocean governance is about opportunities and threats for a sustainable management of oceans and seas, as expressed in inter alia SDG14. Research within the Maritime Institute encompasses the exploitation of natural resources, the prevention of pollution, the protection of marine biodiversity, maritime spatial planning, maritime safety and security and maritime economics.

Research subtopics are:

• The exploitation of ocean resources: law of the sea, fisheries, deep seabed mining;
• The prevention of pollution: operational and accidental pollution from ships, effects of climate change for coasts and small island states;
• The protection of marine biodiversity: in general, beyond national jurisdiction, marine restoration, access and benefit sharing, ecosystem services;
• Maritime spatial planning;
• Maritime safety and security;
• Autonomous vessels;
• Offshore renewable energy;
• Green ports and shipping economics.
