Jan Mees
Prof. Dr. Jan Mees is the general director of the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) in Ostend since its establishment in 1999. Trained as a marine biologist and ecologist, he holds and MSc in Zoology, an MSc in Environmental Sanitation, and a PhD in Marine Biology, all from Ghent University, Belgium, where he is a part-time professor and has been teaching courses on data analysis, statistics, coastal ecosystems and fisheries. Prof. Dr. Mees was the elected chair of the European Marine Board from 2014 to 2019 and represents Flanders in the Belgian delegation to the Executive Council and General Assembly of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. He is the author of close to 100 a1 publications and currently co-chairs the Editorial Board of the IOC’s second Global Ocean Science Report.
